  1. The first video:

I think this is racism because they pointed out the black doll as the bad person,
And when they got asked what the thoughts of adults would be they sad that the black doll is the bad person.
I think they said that because there parents have teact them that.

    Second video:

She should get help with building them libraries because I think its a good idea

  2. I think it’s good that we today in school get to watch these videos, made me realize that society and social media is a big part of washing our brain. They make us think the way that they want us to think, it encourages the single story and there danger to it like the Nigerian girl mentioned. I also thought that Nigerian people or rather some African people didn’t speak English and that they don’t have cars or stove, it was the danger of the single story that the media has shown us all the time. We have never seen the true story or more than one side of the story.

    1. It truly awful that we humans attack other humans because of the natural resources they have and we use them as slaves, however, they still are humans too. I guess we humans only care about our self or at least some of us do, they forget that things can backfire. They may try to hide the evidence but there will always be a visible mark in history that is unforgotten.

Today we get manipulated by media and all kind of things they manipulate how we see things, they make us turns against each other; some sort of amusement. I think we should be careful with what the media says and try to look at things from a different perspective.

  3. In 2009, Nigerian novelist and poet Chimamandu Ngozi Adichie gave a fantastic TED talk, The danger of a single story, which addressed the misunderstanding of African countries, so often portrayed as homogenous, helpless and poverty-stricken in history books and the media. Chimamanda said, “If I had not grown up in Nigeria and if all I knew about Africa were from popular images, I too would think that Africa was a place of beautiful landscapes, beautiful animals and incomprehensible people, fighting senseless wars, dying of poverty and AIDS, unable to speak for themselves and waiting to be saved by a kind, white foreigner.” Its all about what the first story tells and what it doesn’t tell you.

  4. It’s very interesting yet kind of obvious how children are so affected by their environment at such a young age. It’s around the same time you first learn to walk, talk and even start having a mind of your own so it should be very obvious. Although it could just be that as humans we automatically attract to brighter colors and dislike the scary dark colors and therefore as children we’ve made a quick conclusion that darker color skinned people therefore are less attractive.
History could most of the time make us humans automatically assume so much more than we actually know about something. That is why I think we have stereotypes still to this day.

  5. I don’t know what the problem is, I mean yes she talked about a single story; that would be an okay excuse 20 years ago but we are smarter than that. So yeah I just don’t know at this point.

  6. I thought these clips/films could really change the mind of some people. These clips show that almost everyone has stereotypes and some ”pre-thoughts” about almost everyone and everything. It also shows how we get affected by the society and the people around us. I think these tellers and their stories is really good and people should take it in and rethink when it comes to stereotypes. Sometimes u can’t help but to have stereotypes but you should really work on it.

  7. It makes me think about the other side, a lot of people speaks about stereotypes so it shows me the other side. She showed me what she thinks and how other people think about her. We’re often locked in to an opinion about people but she explains that just because you think something about someone, it doesn’t mean that you’re right.

The doll film makes me think that kids have a lot of fantasy so when they hear bad things about people they think they are all bad. Since they have a lot of fantasies it makes it very hard for kids to see the truth. You can’t judge people before knowing them or knowing their background.

  8. The first clip about white and black docks left me the impression of how our parents, society and the people live around us could have great impact to our minds, how we Evaluate and see things and other people. The other clip the speaker talk more about single story and she uses clear examples and evidence on that. One of her examples is that she grew up and raised in Nigeria, middle economic family but she feel bad about their homeboy as the way many people feel when they hear Africa and Africans. She also mention that Africa consist of many countries not only single country but a continent which have different cultures and a way of living. She criticize the prejudice.

  9. Just because the kids say that the darker color is bad, that doesn’t mean that they say that dark skinned people are bad. 8-10 year old kids also kill people in video games, but at the same time will say that killing people is bad.

    Gilla

  10. First video:
I think that the kids reacted that way to the dark doll because that’s the way society taught them to act. For example, in kids shows there’s barely any dark-skinned main characters. The kids see all these white kids do the most important things, and save the world, and stuff because they’re the main character. I’m not saying we see the bad guys as black people, but we do see the white people do the important stuff. This can make even the dark-skinned kids see the white people as the Good Guys.

    Second video:
I feel like she has a huge point. We don’t see stuff from other people’s perspective, and that really hurts the way we see stuff. I’ve grown up thinking that the entire continent of Africa is poor, but later on in life I’ve gotten to know that that is a lie. It’s all about sterotypes.

  11. The first video was upsetting, it makes me mad that society haven´t taken action yet. Eventhough the video was pretty old, I believe that there still are people thinking in this was. Rasicm is a big part of our history, and sadly it will probably never be forgotten.

The second video gives me an other perspective of what other people are experiencing. I think it is really hard to put myself in others situation and actually understand what they are living through. She made a really inspiring, instructive and well done speach that probably can affect many people around the world.

    Gilla

  12. My reactions after looking at those videos is that it´s sad that the black seems like the ugly one and the white seems like the better ones. The reason for this I think depends a lot on how the surroundings look on black and white people.

  13. I’m unsure what i think and I’m getting a bit caught in the doll video. I think what society thinks a racist is and what the actual definition is are different. Seeing a child assuming something based on skin color makes a person automatically wonder who’s to blame. If you make the argument that subtle implicit actions make us have a bias the blame is put on whoever started this circle of raising a child racist. We can blame our parents parents and so on but if we do we’re taking the blame away from ourselves. I think people in todays society are xenophobic in the same way we are racist by default. We can’t accept that altough we might not be 100% to blame that we are racist that does not make us less guilty of being racist.

  14. I was surprised about how many black kids choose the white doll over the black doll. One kid also said that he feels safer around white people and could trust white people more than colored which I find a bit weird, because of all the things white people have done in the world.
I thought her speech was really good and informing and I think she is right. ¨
I hope more people could listen to her with an open mind, and try to understand what she means with how important stories are.

  15. The two films tell us about how certain racist stereotypes has shaped society and how we look at things. Even today it’s still prevalent but in a more discrete way, for example in beauty commercials; it’s much more rare to see models with a darker skin color.

    Gilla

  16. My opinion on the first movie is that those kids are taught to think like that about different people because nobody is born racist. And the second film taught me that just because your black doesn’t mean your IQ is different

  17. Back and white doll
When I see how the children that are black choose the white doll make me thought that it’s not about a egoistic reason, insted something of what we like. Maybe this children have learned or have in planted in theirs brains that make they think that the darkskined one is not beautiful but that white is beautiful.

The danger of a single story
I agree with her’s argument that it’s dangerours to our undersandning African if we only have one poin of view. It’s sad that people have to litle knowledge about ur selfs, because every one is human beings.

  18. task 3:
The thing that stays in my mind is that you need to see things from at least 2 perspectives before you judge anything. A person can be horrible if you listen to one person but be an amazing person if you listen to another person. It’s all about impressions and perspectives.

  20. I don’t really know what stays in my mind about this. But I guess I know now what people think about Saddam Hussein. I learn more about not to judge people because they are also human beings and you shouldn’t stick to stereotypes all the time. The big thing that stays on my mind is just not to judge someone before looking from their perspective. Doesn’t matter if you know him/her well or not by words, you actually need to get to learn to know the person first.

  21. I am kinda surprised that the Palestinians like Saddam Hussein, I don’t know much about him but everything I heard about him was bad, until know because of a clip of Palestinians giving their opinions on him. They liked him cause he was a good leader and he stood up for his own people.
Saddam Hussein could be a good or a bad person but I don’t know much about him.

  22. What stays with you? We have seen a lot about racism, segregation, colonialism, the single story, and such – what stays in your mind?

I really don’t know what to answer on this question. I mean i’ve already seen all this since earlier and i really think all these hate crimes etc are really unnecessary and i really think the world would be a better place without it. And it’s really important to teach students/kids early in school about what’s right and wrong when it comes to dignity and overall respect to other human beings.

  23. I believe that the white doll black doll experiment was a result of society rather than a natural human instinct. When the experiment was first performed in the 1950s most of the children could have gotten their ideas about racism from their parents or teachers. But in recent times people have become generally less racist than when the experiment was origionally performed. I expect that in the modern experiments the children have gotten their ideas primarily from tv, movies, and the media. I expect that you were to take a person fro birth and not expose them to any other human contact they would be near neutral in the tests.
    ————————————————————————————————————
    Task 3:
What stays with me about this topic is the general apathy, numbness, and indifference that people have towards this subject in general. For example the white doll, black doll experiment clearly shows a huge problem in society, yet this is the first time that the majority of the class has ever seen this experiment. The experiment was first performed during the 1950s but has been performed more recently with the results still holding. It is unlikely that this is a natural human instinct and instead it is probably a problem within society, making it incredible that no one seems to care. I found it very worrying that most people did not care about this issue.

  24. task 3: I think that just as the ”first story” can give you a negative perspective for something good it can also be the other way around. Not every place in Syria is bombed or filled by evil men with big guns. The grass can actually be greener on the other side.
It kinda shook me that people didn’t dislike Saddam Hussein even though it kinda makes sense. The little I know about him is that he was generally a bad leader who was greedy. It seems like the Palestinians look past the negative stuff that doesn’t affect them in a bad way.

    Gilla

  25. Task 3:
After watching all those sorts of clips and read texts about colonialism and rasism. What stays with me is that the world had went through very difficult times interms of how people lived on the planet treated each other in early times. Its embracing to imaging that some people were slaves and owned by other people as they are instruments, animals or some kind of an instrument.
The modern world I wouldn’t say there’s no rasism but its very little if you compare how it were 50 years ago.

  26. I have realized that we as people have a lot of stereotypes and usually judge them by their ”cover” instead of learning how people actually are.
I was surprised also by the large following behind Saddam Hussein in Palestine.
(#ImGay is trending on Twitter. Makes me wonder why gay people glorify being gay, but when a straight guy does it. They are homophobes? :O )
Just a thought btw, no hate pls ❤

  27. For say, western people it can be hard to see the stories behind people who are stuck with oppressed governments and war, as well as their thoughts, opinions and how they see the world. Basically, that it’s easy to lose yourself in all of the media coverage, the horrific photos and video and that you can easily forget that there is an actual person behind all of those suffering. It comes back to the previous lesson we had on stereotypes and how we may perceive people as something different than what they really are. Personally, I was very surprised how many of the people were pro-gay in Tel Aviv considering how religious Israel is.

    Gilla

  28. well people can have their opinion about things, but its wrong doing when its in the belief that one ”race” is superior to another (that’s what racism is), which doesn’t make much sense ‘cuz we are all humans.

    Gilla

  29. First video:
When asked which doll was bad or mean, almost all children pointed to the black doll. I think this is just the way they see things. Almost all the kids in the video look very young and probably don’t know much, if anything about racism in the world. So i wouldn’t call them racist, children are just very honest.
