  3. Describe the setting of the short story ”The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty.

The story happens in Dublin, Ireland, in June of 1922 between sun-down and sun-up. The setting is critical on the grounds that it is amid the Irish common war. Since it is dim, the setting is scary and premonition, which is fitting of the completion, when the expert sharpshooter finds he has slaughtered his own particular sibling.

How does the the sniper feel about the war at the beginning of the story?

The main indication in the start of the tale about how the expert marksman feels about the war (in a generally disconnected portrayal of his exercises) shows up in the second section when the third individual storyteller alludes to him by saying, ”his eyes had the icy sparkle of an aficionado.” A devotee is somebody who is completely devoted to a reason so the peruser must expect that the Republican rifleman is focused on his part in…

Why does the sniper kill the old woman? What happens after he fires his weapon?

Notwithstanding her being a source, the old lady knows the area of the hero expert sharpshooter. The expert marksman watches her wave to a foe vehicle. She converses with the trooper inside, and she indicates where the expert sharpshooter is. Now in the story, three individuals know the area of the Republican sniper.”The expert marksman slaughters the old lady since she is a source for the Free Staters. ”

In Liam O’Flaherty’s ”The Sniper,” what does the woman symbolize?

One of the primary topics Liam O’Flaherty’s looks at all through his short story ”The Sniper” concerns the mental impacts of war and consistent viciousness. In the short story, the expert marksman sees a heavily clad vehicle cross the extension and progress gradually up the road. An old lady, going about as a witness, at that point approaches the defensively covered auto and starts conversing with an aggressor remaining in the turret of the vehicle. The rifleman at that point focuses and closes…

How does the street between the sniper and his target function as a symbol in the short story, ”The Sniper?”

On a street in downtown Dublin amid the Irish Civil War a Republican expert sharpshooter is posted on a housetop in Liam O’Flaherty’s short story ”The Sniper.” Opposite him on the opposite side of the street is a Free State rifleman. The street which isolates them is an image of the division between the Irish who needed finish flexibility from the British, Republicans, and those that were ready to acknowledge being a piece of the British Commonwealth…

What causes the sniper to risk being shot by a machine gun near the end of ”The Sniper”?

I think the general character trait that makes the expert marksman explore the Free Stater rifleman is interest. Maybe he had been in his own particular organization before the split in the armed force. He chose to hazard heading toward observe him. The Republican expert sharpshooter is really inquisitive about who the other marksman is. Since the war that is occurring is a common war.

Who is the antagonist of ”The Sniper”?

Liam O’Flaherty’s short story ”The Sniper” is determined to a Dublin housetop amid the Irish Civil War. Republicans are battling Free Staters in a pitched road fight. The hero of the story is a Republican sharpshooter who is situated on a housetop not a long way from the Four Courts government structures which had been possessed by Republican troops. The hero is hollowed against his inverse, a marksman for the Free State powers.
What is the tone of the story? What is it trying to say?
As to tone and inclination, consider that the story is based on a solitary expert marksman, an exceptionally youthful trooper attempting to get by in the Irish Civil War. Presently take a gander at the opening passage and note the reiteration of ”dull” and ”night” and in addition words, for example, ”blurred,” ”diminish,” ”quiet,” and weapons ”yelping.” The scene is dim, dreadful, and noiseless; that hush is broken just by gunfire. The disposition is dim, premonition, and constantly loaded with strain in the foresight of brutality.

It is trying to say is that the tone of this story is sad because the fact is that these things actually happen in real life and yet we don’t hear about things like this.

  4. 1. It’s in the middle of a night, the sniper is up on a roof with multiple other roofs around him. There is a road that leads to a bridge nearby. The whole story is in Ireland according to my own knowledge (googled the name of the bridge).
    2. He was excited about it but he didn’t really take it that serious since he had been in many other wars.
    3. Because she knew his location and was informing them. He first killed the guy at the turret, he then shot the woman in the stomach. Just seconds after that he was shot in his right arm by a sniper from the other rooftop next to him.
    4. Some sort of distraction to what the threat really is. Just like in Childish Gambino’s latest song ”This is America” where there are multiple distractions to what really is happening and what the real threat is.
    5. Like something that both of them tried to stay away from, I got the feeling that it was full of something that would either kill them or just not let them out of there.
    6. He thought he recognized the sniper that he had killed and felt like he had to identify him.
    7. I think that the sniper sees everyone as an enemy and therefore he becomes the real enemy.
    8. That everything is not always as it seems, sometimes you have to know more about what you’re doing before actually doing it.

  5. part 3

Both ”the sniper” and ”the crane” are actually similar and in some way, they are the same, but still very different. Both texts have a particularly unique meaning though they are not at the same time and space. We will dive in and take a closer look at what the authors really mean by the things they have written; and what is the similarities between them

Although they seem different, we shall discover what these texts have in common. When we read the text we instantly get to know that the place of these stories is in a civil war type situation. People are getting killed right and left. At the same time, both of the main characters don’t want to kill, they are instead forced to fight.

Furthermore the main character in ”the sniper” does actually kill a lot of people and in ”the cranes” there not much killing happening, but a very big difference between the two text is that sniper actually managed to kill his own brother though he didn’t even have a clue and did that only because he was in a bad situation and he wanted to survive. The theme ”the sniper” is darker and sad than the one in”the cranes”

Let alone that in ”the cranes” two childhood friends actually works together to survive though on the main character was ordered to kill his childhood friend. He spared his friends life when he remembers when they both were younger and let a crane go. The theme is not so dark as the one in ”the sniper”

In conclusion, both stories are set in the same situation, characters that are in a war situation. In addition to ”the sniper” the main character kills someone important and that changes the way of how he thinks about the war, though he did not get to choose if he wanted to kill or not he had to, so he could survive. But in the ”the cranes” he gets to choose what he wants to do and maybe it wants to teach that friends can overcome war if they are the enemies

  6. ”The Sniper” and ”Cranes” comparison (essay)

There are several similarities that the two stories ”The Sniper” and ”Cranes” share, the most noticable being that love and peace are valued higher than war. In both texts, the main charachters discovers that war brings tragedy; it ends the lives of many people disregarding whether or not they were beneficial to society. In war all you can see is people’s image but nothing deeper. It misses what those people represent entierly.

In both stories, the main charachter were forced to fight against family and friends, proving that war brings out the best and the worst of each charachter by turning them against their closest allies. We see this in ”The Sniper” when the narrator kills his own brother with no hesitation beliving it was an enemy. However, in ”Cranes” we see that the conflict in the story revolves around the main characther (Songasm) whom is being forced to shoot his childhood friend. He decides right then and there that war is not stronger than love and friendship; instead of shooting him he lets him go, similar to them letting a crane go when they were younger.

Aside from these similarities, there are also various of diffrences in both texts. To begin with ”The Sniper” is a story about the main character accidently shooting his own brother. We can learn from this that war changes a person completely, there comes a point when you lose yourself in it and you stop caring about who you kill even if it’s your own brother. Your lust for blood increases while your sanity decreases, seen in this text when after he shot and killed the enemy sniper he took the time to appriciate his kill by thinking it was a good shot. ”Cranes” on the other hand was about forgivness; forgiving your enemy thus your enemy can be your friend. In the story the main charachter lets his enemy walk away instead of killing him (keep in mind they’re in a war this is seen as treason).

In conclusion as one can tell there are many similarities and diffrences that both stories has with one another. We compared between what the texts were about but also what what they represent and this can of course be perceived in diffrent ways. Some may like ”The Sniper” more because killing people with a sniper is awesome, while others may prefer ”Cranes” because forgiving your enemies represents something that is bigger than war. It depends on the personality of the person.

  7. FIVE PARAGRAPH ESSAY

Both ”the sniper” and ”the crane” has a very important message that is important for us in this new age. Both texts have a particularly unique meaning though they are not at the same time and space. But in the ”the cranes” he gets to choose what he wants to do and maybe it wants to teach that friends can overcome war even if they are the enemies.

Some of us would only think of them self in war type situation and they don’t care about others and that is bad because we should all help each other and we always can make a chose but sometimes that choice doesn’t turn up good like it did when in ”the sniper” the main guy killed his brother. We sometimes have difficult times and treat other very bad if it’s your parent or siblings and in reality we would be very sad if something happened to them even though sometimes we wish that something bad would happen to them. Maybe that is the main message in ”the sniper”
