  1. 1. How would you describe John?
I would describe John as a lovely and caring husband that want to protects his wife and kid to much.

    2. What is his occupation?
He’s a scientist, but apparently also knows a great deal about the body and calls himself a doctor.

    3. How would you describe the narrator (berättaren)?
The narrator could be described in two different way. One where she is a psychopath and sees everything in her own way, for example that John is her real man but really she lives on a home for people with mental disorders. The more normal way to describe her would be to say that she is a women who lived at a time where they didn’t have any rights and her husband made her believe she were sick to ”protect” her.

    4. Why do you think she is forbidden to ’work’? And why is work put with quotation marks?
I would say that the ”work” they meant were more like stuff a housewife does then going and working in a mine. John seems like a person with a need of power which is probably a lot more then the normal person. He also seems manipulative so he can get exactly what he wants from people, like the narrator which he want to keep as a trophy wife and not love her like a partner.

    5. How does John treat the narrator?
John treats her in a good way to manipulate her, but as told he always had somewhat of a angry face behind his happy and helping face.

    6. How would you describe the wallpaper in the old nursery?
A yellow wallpaper with much details that were somehow ripped a part by a woman.

    7. Why, do you think, does the narrator feel so ill?
Because she is manipulated by her husband.

    8. What is so strange about the wallpaper?
I feel that’s the narrators only safe heaven where she feels not manipulated and safe to be her own.

    9. How would you describe the narrator’s and John’s relationship?
Like the rest of the questions, were manipulatively where she feels a strong loving affection where he sees her as a object and not a person to love.

    10. What does she see in the pattern by moonlight? How do you interpret what she sees?
She sees a round object which spins and make har dizzy. The first thing that comes in to mind is the spinning black and white circle which makes the victim manipulated by the person behind the circle/wheel.

    11. How do you explain the narrator’s deteriorating condition?
The worst kind of sicknesses are of course the deadly ones, but I would rather die knowing what is going on in my head, then have some kind of sickness in your mind like dementia or depression, which I would say is more closely connected to her ”sickness” then a physical one.

    12. What happens in the end, do you think? What (if any) deeper meaning do you see to the story?
The only real way I can see is that she is trying to hurt herself and has locked herself in the nursery to be hanged. This last part is the most confusing thing I’ve read and it’s really hard to see something out of this, maybe that you shouldn’t treat women as dolls or objects but as people.

with quotation marks? I think they mean any physically or mentally straining activities, and I think she isnt allowed to work because of her weak condition.

John treats her kind of nice, except the fact that he disregards her opinion on her sickness because he is more educated about the subject, he doesnt care to listen to it.

creepy and weird, the kind that will make you look at it and keep looking until you cant stand it anymore and have to go somewhere else cause youre feeling sick.

The pattern feels like it is moving.

    4. Why do you think she is forbidden to ’work’? And why is work put
    with quotation marks?
    – The narrator is forbidden to work because she has depression, and the best way to cure depression is to rest. The word ‘work’ is put between quotation marks because writing and exercising was counted as hard as ‘working’ for her.

    3.
How would you describe the narrator (berättaren)?
    – She is sick, but want to go on adventures, explore and grow up her creativity.
    4.
Why do you think she is forbidden to ’work’? And why is work put with quotation marks?
    – The husband and the doctors probably think she has grown sick and she must rest thus the name rest cure. They want her to take it easy. Her ”work” is writing and many might not think that is a real job.
    5.
How does John treat the narrator?
    – He treats her with care and love. She does not want her further harm. He wants her to get healthy and loveable
    6.
How would you describe the wallpaper in the old nursery?
    – I would describe the wallpaper as strange and mysterious. With strange patterns on it and constantly changing it might be from the narrators perspective indicating she is going insane.
    7.
Why, do you think, does the narrator feel so ill?
    – I think it is because she can’t really do anything. All she is forced to do is lie down on her bed and not doing anything at all leading to depression and anxiousness.
    8.
What is so strange about the wallpaper?
    – The narrator always seem to sense something wrong with it, someone watching her every move. It feels like the wallpapers are alive trapping her own real self.
    9.
How would you describe the narrator’s and John’s relationship?
    – As I see it both of them are happy with each other and are in love but because this is in another century things are different, the women in the house doesn’t really do much for the family. So she is at home and not doing what her passion really is. Because John doesn’t want her to get hurt more she forbids her to go out or write with her passion thus leading to a toxicated relationship and a manipulative one.
    10.
What does she see in the pattern by moonlight? How do you interpret what she sees?
    – I think she sees another woman trapped behind the patterns of the wallpaper but when it is moonlight something triggers and the figure starts to walk around or perhaps to be more accurate, to creep.
    11.
How do you explain the narrator’s deteriorating condition?
    – She is in a deep depression. Not being able to do what she wants and being forced to be inside all day, lying on the bed. For the doctors this might be a good solution to what problem she had but in reality it just worsens it, leading to greater deppression.
    12.
What happens in the end, do you think? What (if any) deeper meaning do you see to the story
    – The narrator has stripped off all the wallpaper in the room and is now creeping around when her man walks in to the room and she starts saying she is liberated and she is finally free. The man faints perhaps because this was too horrifying for him to experience. The narrator keeps creeping around, stepping on his body. This is a really creepy ending for me and there might be some deep meanings to it all. First of, She is saying she is free and liberated. But is she really liberated considering she is walking around the room without stop or has she gone insane from all the pressure from the wallpaper. Is she still the same person as the narrator or has the figure in the wallpaper possesed her body? Is this freedom for the narrator or is this freedom for the figure now living inside her body.

    with quotation marks?

Her physician husband John firmly believes that the best way to treat the narrator is to rid her of any creativity and fancies. Her ’work’ being writing or artistry is something that requires a creative mind, which John will not allow. And the reason ’work’ is put with quotation marks is that women didn’t necessarily work during that time and it was generally the men who were allowed to do work.

When John breaks into the locked room and sees the full horror of the situation, he faints in the doorway, so that the narrator has to creep over him every time.
