Gasland – the town hall meeting

In this case you will have the opportunity to:

  • Search for relevant information
  • Question the credibility and reliability of different sources
  • Discuss to develop arguments
  • Write an argumentative presentation
  • Discuss environmental issues in general and draw comparisons between different countries, based on your knowledge and experience.

Warm-up exercise

What do you think are the biggest issues facing our environment? Why?

What does the phrase ”think globally, act locally”, tell you?

Town hall meeting – the case

You will be divided into groups of three. You are all members of a small Wyoming town which has been chosen for ”fracking”. You have invited the governor of your state to your town hall to try to convince him that he should not allow fracking in your county.

In the group:

Based on the film and on the texts linked below discuss how you best can convince the governor to change his/her mind.

Step-by-step

  1. Watch the film (First class)
  2. Read texts. (Revisit the film, if needed) (Second class)
  3. List arguments and evidence. Draft argument. (Make sure to have 3-5 strong arguments that you can base on evidence) HAND IN DRAFTS AS A POST! (Third class)
  4. Individually write a manuscript for your speech. Help each other out! (Fourth class) Submit manuscript.
  5. TOWN HALL MEETING. Come prepared and dressed for the occasion! You are the one who can save you community from disaster! (Sixth class)

Devil’s Advocate (optional)

You are a representative of Halliburton. You have come to the town hall to hold a speech where you try to convince the citizens of this community of the benefits of fracking and gas.

As above, but you must find your own evidence. This is a VERY difficult task.

Gasland (2010):

Analysis and discussion of documentary

Before you watch the film, read the questions below. Try to have them at the back of your mind while watching the film and then jot down notes on each question.

  1. What do you learn from this film? What does it make you think?
  2. What do you experience in terms of emotions when watching this film? What does the film make you feel? Why?
  3. Is the information in the film supported by sources? What kind of sources? How reliable is the information in the film?
  4. This film, of course, has noble purposes, but it is also trying to inform, convince and persuade us. How is the documentary designed to persuade or even entertain us? Is there a clear line between information and entertainment?

The texts

Here you will find texts that will give you all the information you need to protect your community and convince politicians and law-makers. This text gives information on how you can take action. This text gives you information on the dangerous side-effects of fracking. Together they give you all the information you need to develop a convincing argument.

Evaluating credibility of sources

Template
An oral argument has an introduction where you adress your audience.

INTRODUCTION

You state your opinion and give reasons for it. You can start with an anecdote also. This can touch the emotions of the listener!

BODY

You should have 3-5 arguments in your overall argument.

CLAIM + EVIDENCE

Examples:

Claim Flight attendants who suffer from diseases shown to be connected to inhaling secondhand smoke on airlines for at least five years before 1995 should have the costs of their treatment and disability covered by tobacco companies.

EVIDENCE Tobacco companies have concealed evidence that nicotine causes cancer. Studies show that secondhand smoke can be damaging.

  • Claim – an opinion or idea, often an oppositional claim exists
  • Evidence/Reason – a reason why the claim is a “good idea”

END

Punchline or appeal or end as you started.

  1. Comments to myself as to arguments to use and stuff to look up.
    1. It will boost the whole country’s economy. And that way help OUR town, through lowering taxes and cheapening products. Think about how not alot of people have it good in our poor town, wouldnt you want to help them?
    2. The gas we will frack will help fuel our cars, fuel is a necessity in today’s hectic fast-paced society!
    3. Remember we are living in the United states of america, the land of opportunity. We want to help our country dont we? The fracking will help OUR country, so we shall take this opportunity to provide the help our country require from us.
    4. Our small town could use some more jobs couldnt it? Think of this as a start, the land of opportunity i say ones again. This is our opportunity new jobs await us all, and maybe it could help kickstart someones whole career! The profits will outweigh all the risks, we will be guarenteed with water supply if we demand it. See of it as a small sacrifice for the greater good, we all want to help society in every little way possible, dont we? What do we in this town actually do for our society the ones that give us jobs, a home to live in and overall a safe environment. Think about that for a second what do we actually do? This is our chance.

Hard facts that can be used i will look up by myself. Arguments as to how much we actually will profit, different statics to show water supply etc.
Overall the good fracking will do is get gas, give jobs and out of those 2 a bunch of other things come out specific things such as, exact increase in overall wealth products export import. Also i will look up the chemicals and see how u could find a loop hole to argument as to how they are not so lethal.
Also trying to use sad facts about fracking in a way as to show compassion but try to show how the profits outweigh them could make it more credible, because its not all rainbows and sunshine and you understand that. Makes you as a person more credible in other peoples eyes.

  2. We humans depend on energy and fuel, without it we will go back to the stone age, but how far can we go? Should we hurt other people to achieve this goal? of course not. One of the biggest problems with fracking is how it affects the environment. Fracking companies spill out waste products like it is water, this waste water is extremely bad for everyone and everything that comes into contact with it, it can cause earthquakes and even tough the fracking companies recover some of there waste product most of it is left in nature.

Sometimes when people live near a fracking facility they get some terrible side effect such as sick animals, it can even lead to cancer which we have enough of today. According to Reynard Loki there has been over 1000 cases of contaminated water and so far they are still allowed to frackel near peoples home.

It’s not enough that the fracking companies are using and contaminating water, most of the water is never recovered. When water is such vital part of our survival we have to preserve it, not waste it. Even Jason Banes think that this is a problem. Jason said this once ”We don’t want to look up 20 years from now and say, Oops, we used up all our water” .

  3. Devils Advocate
Fracking gas might seem to be dangerous and evil, but the reality is that the drilling affects a very small number of people. The water has been ruined for around 1000 families according to unreliable sources, so the number is an estimate in the higher end. On the other side the gas and natural resources benefit a lot of people. With the gas you can fuel busses in big cities that millions of people travel with annually. Using natural resources in your own country can also help the environment and the countries economy. When buying oil from other countries you have to ship it here, which can affect the environment in a bad way. Every form of energy has its negatives, but fracking gas has very few if you look at the big picture. This industry brings work and people out to rural areas and boost the economy of small towns. Bring a drill to a smaller town and suddenly most people there have work close by their house.

    Normal
Fracking natural gas might seen like a quick and easy way to get energy, but the truth is far from it. Fracking gas requires a lot of water. When the water has been used it’s contaminated and, more often than not, left in nature. Families living close to drills pump up this, unknowingly, dangerous water as drinking water and drink it. This has been known to cause illness and diseases, some people’s pets has even died. There are other, cleaner, ways of getting energy but you can’t make as much money doing that. That’s why fracking is so popular. The natural gas industry is only powered by greed and money. A CEO of a big company doesn’t really care about the few families that might get hurt in process of him earning a higher raise. Fracking is also dangerous for the environment. 90% of the water used when fracking is permanently removed from the natural water cycle and will probably be stuck in the ground for thousands of years.

  4. -Not so completed Argument-

A lot of information on fracking has been spilled to the public. One of the things being that it uses an extremely high amount of water. About 8 million gallons. For states such as Arkansas, California, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, Texas and Wyoming this spells bad news. Since these states are zones that are already afflicted with drought and water stress. Fracking is in turn, a massive dump of precious water. And looking into the future, water might not be so naturally obvious for us to have access to whenever and almost wherever we want.

  5. Claim: Fracking harm humans, animals and nature alike. The poisonous water which gets contaminated by the substances mixed in with the water makes the water in wells unable to drink for humans, animals and plants. These things lead to migration of people who more likely will move closer to another really overpopulated area with less apartments and houses to stay in compared to the more wide spread areas where the fracking is taking place in.

Evidence: The fracking companies are not willing to answer what all 500+ substances that are in this ”cocktail” are used for.

Claim: Much of the materials used in fracking is never seen again, and the parts who will come back are dangerous to every living thing, this makes fracking an extremely non-recycleable industry where many of the things will never be seen again by mankind.

Evidence: ”More than 90 percent of the water used in fracking well never returns to the surface.” The 10% which comes back are contaminated by the toxic gases.

Claim: The fracking companies takes away the freedom of the small man with the help of politicians and makes the ideals of which the country is built upon false when they show that the little man’s freedom is neglected compared to the big bad corporations by the politicans.

Evidence: ”Even if your state doesn’t have a mandatory review process” which means that states doesn’t have
review the companies who want to build oil wells.

Claim: Fracking forces people to move out of their state to a place with drinkable water which is not hard to come by which leads to shifting problems in the society. This especially hurts people in the south-west.

Evidence: ”Since that water is permanently removed from the natural water cycle, this is bad news for drought-afflicted or water-stressed states, such as Arkansas, California, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, Texas and Wyoming.”

  6. Frackring is the most efficient way of getting natural gases but is at the same time harming the environment ,people and animals in the area if the drilling site

Claim”Up to millions of gallons of water are mixed with sand and 40,000 gallons of chemicals pumped into these wells at high pressure to break the rock and release the goods. While the exact mixtures of chemicals used for fracking are often withheld as trade secrets,”

Evidence: we do know that many of the chemicals have been associated with a whole host of health issues, including cancer.

Claim”Chemical-laced wastewater can spill and pollute drinking water as well as cause earthquakes when massive amounts of it are disposed.”

Evidence: A 2014 study conducted by the Colorado Department of Environmental and Occupational Health found that mothers who live near fracking sites are 30 percent more likely to have babies with congenital heart defects

  7. 1. Chemicals used in the fracturing mix is considered a company secret but some of the parts of the mixture has been revealed. One of the is formaldahyde which is considered a carcinogen(cancer producing chemical). Even the USA government has recognized this as late as 2011 by the US National Toxicity Program. Even chemicals such as lead, which has been know as a poison for decades, uranium, which 6th graders learns of the famous radioactive element and hydrochloride acid which is know as one of the most dangerous and corrosive chemicals known to man.

    2. The amount of water used in the process of fracking is insane. 72 TRILLION gallons, thats 272,55 to the power of EIGHTEEN in liters!! You can supply this many household(400 gallons a day) per year with this amount of water: 493 150 684 931 506. And with the draught in many states this could be vital for the survival of farmland and irrigation.

    3. Of course we need power to our cities and cars but with the revenue of the oil industry 2014 being 220 billion dollars which is equal to buying 18 million solar pannel systems that will supply the household with 100% of it’s electricity. And thats buying individual systems with 100% buyout. Imagine this being used to invest in partial or fully solar powered cities!(All the values used are being based on USA averages)

  8. Some people think that fracking is good for our society because we can extract oil and nature gas from impermeable rock formation, which we can use on cars. But, fracking has its bad side too. According to the website http://www.alternet.org it says that during the fracking process, the methane gas and toxic chemicals leak out from the well and contaminate nearby groundwater. The contaminate water is used for drinking water in local communities. So, if the workers continue fracking the ground, it could end badly because the water will be undrinkable. And what if people end up drinking bad water? They could become really ill or perhaps even die?

Fracking doesn’t only affect our water, it can also causes earthquakes, 40000 gallons of chemicals used for facturing site, 8 million gallons of water per fracking, 600 number of chemicals used in the fracking fluid, the cows will die because we don’t give them drinkable water etc. What if the cows die? What if these 40000-gallon chemicals get into our water? What if we spend our water per fracking?

You see my point? We would be out of food and water one day and the chemicals will make our water undrinkable, which it will make harder for us to produce vegetables because you need the water to produce them. Maybe we will not get it today, maybe we will get it tomorrow, maybe next year. I can’t really say when it’s going to happen. But, I can tell you if we continue fracking. It will happen.

We should stop fracking because during more than 90% of the water used in fracking well never returns to the surface. Since the water is removed from the nature water cycle, this is bad for the world. According to http://www.alternet.org the redirection of water supplies to the fracking industry not only causes water price spikes, it also reduces water availability for crop irrigation. And what if we can’t bring back our water somehow? What if we can’t produce food or vegetables? It will just end like judgement day because we don’t have neither water or food.

*WARNING* I didn’t have much time to show every argument I had. I will show you in the next lesson when we write our manuscript. But, this is what I have. *WARNING*

  10. We are living on earth that is the only planet with enough resources need for human life. Earth resources isn’t infinite and shouldn’t be used for whatever. In the process of fracking there are used a lot of materials that are both toxic and normal resources like water and sand. When fracking there are being used fine sand or frat sand which has driven a silica sand mining boom in Minnesota and Wisconsin, which together have 164 active frat sand facilities with 20 more proposed. The Silica can impede breathing and cause respiratory irruption, cough, airway obstruction and porr lung function. Silica is affecting those who are living nere a fracking site and when there are multiplies sites around a house you can’t, or shouldn’t live there.

Not only sand is being used but a extreme amount of water is being used not just for fracking a hole but to keeping the hole up for the drilling of nature gas. 8 million gallons of water is being used per fracking and to run the gas well there needs 72 trillion gallons of water. All that extreme amount of water is being used but only 10 % of the that water comes backup again and that water isn’t normal drinking water. The other 90% just disappear and dosen’t return to the nature.

A lot of chemical is being used when fracking and those chemical is dangerous. A lot of waste is coming backup after fracking and those wastes need to be treated in someway. The correct or the most friendly way right now is to make a pool and trying to let the toxic just be in those pools. But a lot of nature gas drilling companies are lazy and dosen’t try to treat the waste and just dumping it near rivers or in the nature and that affect the hole nature cycle. People who live close have their water well being affected by the waste of the fracking. There’s been around 1000 cases of people having their tap water on fire and thats because of the nature gas being mixed with their water wells.

  12. DRAFT

Fracking is a dangerous operation for both us humans and the animals who lives in the nature, I want to make a change and make you all realise how unhealthy this is for our environment. The method for fracking needs to stop for the sake of our future and if we don’t it will cause permanent damage to us all, to the air and to the food we eat every day.

Fracking uses too much of our resources. Fracking uses up to 72 trillion gallons of water and 90% of the water is damaged permanently and is radiated. This permanently damages the water cycle and will cause drought if tracking continues.

Fracking endangers the nature and the habitants.

Fracking uses unknown chemicals = Air pollution

    Fracking might cause cancer.

    CLAIM:
Fracking is proven to be a cause of cancer. Fracking requires fracking fluid that contains over 600 chemicals and the majority of the chemicals are dangerous for the human lungs to breathe in. Fracking also require 40 thousand gallons of chemicals.

    EVIDENCE:
Fracking has been proven to cause cancer. Fracking fluid contains over 600 chemicals and the majority of it is unknown to the habitants. Fracking use up to 40 thousand gallons of chemicals for every site.

    Hello Mayor BOOBAMA!
I want you to be aware of the fracking here around the Wyoming and I definitely don’t want the fracking to cause permanent damages to our humble town. This fracking operation requires a lot of resources and uses dangerous chemicals to make the fracking possible

    Gilla

  13. hello there! I am writing this message to you about how fracking has damaged the environment and the health of people, animals and much more.

Claim: Fracking is using a lott of resurser just to get like 300.000 thousand of barrel gas but att what cost.

Evidence: this is how much resursers it needs just to use and to run a Fracking
1.40 000: gallons of chemicals used for each fracturing site
2.8 million: number of gallons of water used per fracking
3.600: number of chemicals used in the fracking fluid, including known carcinogens and toxins such as lead, benzene, uranium, radium, methanol, mercury, hydrochloric acid, ethylene glycol and formaldehyde: and more dude.
4.72 trillion: gallons of water needed to run current gas wells
5.360 billion: gallons of chemicals needed to run current gas wells

Claim: All the water from the fracking has disappeared and is not coming back up again to the surface. We are losing a lot of water and we may have no water left to use later on.

Evidence: More than 90 percent of the water used in fracking well never returns to the surface. Since that water is permanently removed from the natural water cycle, this is bad news for drought-afflicted or water-stressed states, such as Arkansas, California, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, Texas and Wyoming.

Claim: fracking has a chance or like the fracking is the cause of earthquake thats happening in america.

Evidence:On April 20, the U.S. Geological Survey released a long-awaited report that confirmed what many scientists have long speculated: the fracking process causes Earthquakes.

  14. G’day my fellow humans. Humanity shares this earth with a plethora of other living beings. But we alone, are the ones leading this earth towards its end. While we are taking steps in the right direction, thinking about the environment in almost everything we do in some shape or form. Sadly, fracking is not one of those steps. On the contrary, it’s a step in the wrong direction.

Fracking produces a lot of natural gas, but in turn negatively affects the surrounding areas.
Water gets contaminated and undrinkable, which kills fish and animals that is dependent on that water to survive.

Even residential water wells get affected, making it undrinkable and even hazardous. Some people can even light their own water on fire. I don’t know about you, but i don’t want my own kids to live in a household where you can’t even use the water for domestic use such as washing the dishes or shower. Even less so drink it to quench ones thirst. Not even mentioning the fact that it could randomly combust any second, blowing the whole property to smithereens.

The sheer amount of resources used for fracking is also a problem, especially when 90% of it is never seen again. They use 8 million gallons of water per fracking, which is over 7.2 millions of gallons of water lost, and permanently removed from the natural water cycle.

The reason for fracking is in itself not a negative, i personally think they are doing it for the right reason. But i also feel like the way they are doing it could not be more wrong. The natural gases produced from fracking, cannot be worth the thousands of lives negatively affected, the tons and tons natural resources spent and lost or the negative effects it has on the environment.

  15. Hello Mr.governor, my name’s Johan Challita and today I’m going to talk about the negative effects of fracking, what causes it has, why we should fracking less and what my suggestion.

So, if the workers continue fracking the ground, it could end badly because the water will become undrinkable. And what if people end up drinking bad water? They could become really ill or perhaps even die? Do you really want to harm people’s health to achieve a goal? Think a minute.

Fracking doesn’t only affect our water, it can also causes earthquakes, 40000 gallons of chemicals used for facturing site, 8 million gallons of water per fracking, 600 number of chemicals used in the fracking fluid, load noises and the cows dies because they drink less healthy water etc. What if the cows die? What if these 40000-gallon chemicals get into our water? What if we spend our water per fracking?

You see my point? We would be out of food and water one day and the chemicals will make our water undrinkable, which it will make harder for us to produce vegetables because you need the water to produce them. Plus we will get less food from the cows because they die.

I have talked about the negative effects of fracking, what causes it has and why we should fracking less. Now I want to share my suggestion to you:
We should fracking less and think more about our environment and health because during more than 90% of the water used in fracking well never returns to the surface. Since the water is removed from the nature water cycle and this is bad for the world.

According to http://www.alternet.org and http://www.nrdc.org the redirection of water supplies to the fracking industry not only causes water price spikes, it also reduces water availability for crop irrigation, which it will make harder for us to produce vegetables. And what if we can’t bring back our water somehow? What if we can’t produce food or vegetables? Our life would just end because we can’t get food or healthy water somehow.

I have talked about the negative effects of fracking, what causes it has, why we should fracking less and what my suggestion is. Now I want to talk about my sources:

http://www.nrdc.org is a reliable source because Nrdc works to safeguard the earth- its people, its plants and animals, and the natural systems. You can contact them via email if you want to ask them some questions about the fracking and they will answer to you with facts and sources. Their mission is to inspire action and advocacy on the environment, humans right and civil liberties, social justice, media, health care issues and more. You can contact them via email if you want to ask them some questions about the fracking and they will answer to you with facts and sources

  16. Fracking Arguments
    Claim:
Natural gas is mostly methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas that traps 86 times as much heat as carbon dioxide. And because methane leaks during the fracking process, fracking may be worse than burning coal, mooting the claim that natural gas burns more cleanly than coal.

    Evidence:
A recent international satellite study on North American fracking production led by the Institute of Environmental Physics at the University of Bremen in Germany found that ”fugitive methane emissions” caused by the fracking process ”may counter the benefit over coal with respect to climate change” and that ”net climate benefit…is unlikely.”
In other word that’s means it’s as bad as burning coal if not worse

    Claim:
Every thing on this planet needs water, and the water reserves on this planet wont last forever. So we shouldn’t waste it in unrecyclable circuits like fracking. It’s only about 10% of the water we see again after the drilling and that water is polluted with an insane amount of different toxins.

    Evidence:
A single well can produce more than a million gallons of wastewater, which contains radioactive elements like radium and carcinogenic hydrocarbons like benzene. Most of the water never se the surface again and disperse in the ground or leak into the groundwater

    Claim:
The Fracking companies doesn’t claim the responsibility for nearby people and animals illnesses.

    Evidence:
”A 2014 study conducted by the Colorado Department of Environmental and Occupational Health found that mothers who live near fracking sites are 30 percent more likely to have babies with congenital heart defects.”Fracking doesn’t only hurt the unborn, but also every living creature, if humans or other living creatures get exposed too the toxic waste from the fracking process or if gas and other things from the process have leaked out into the ground water it can lead to big health problems, including asthma, headaches, high blood pressure, anemia, heart attacks and cancer.
    NOT COMPLITED!!!

  17. Mr Governor, I have come from an area where the people and the environment are getting sick. Their cattle and animals are dying from the toxic water and the children are getting sick from this gas. So deny the upcoming request from the natural gas company that wants to destroy our community.

In the process of extracting natural gas, they release gas through drilling and creating small earthquakes. When the gas is released the gas could go into the surrounding area through the dirt. The gas with the toxic chemicals would then kill or damage the animal life.

To extract natural gas you also need an incredible amount of water. About 72 trillion gallons or 273 trillion liters of water to run todays active gas wells. Only 10% of the water comes back, what for? 300 000 gallons or 1.35 million liters of natural gas every day.

As mentioned earlier the process includes about 600-700 toxic chemicals. These chemicals are directly dangerous to the environment and to animal life.

So in conclusion the increase of the natural gas industry is not a good thing as the companies say. The evidence of fracking as a problem is overwhelming and we should not extract natural gas in our sweet little town. Marc Town should not be another victim of the fracking consequences as previously said. Let the cattle and the animal life live in our beautiful environment. Thank you Governor for your time and we hope you make the right decision in this question.

To extract natural gas you also need an incredible amount of water. About 72 trillion gallons or 273 trillion m3 of water to run todays active gas wells. Only 10% of the water comes back, what for? 300 000 gallons or 1.35 million m3 of natural gas every day.

Mr Governor, I come from a town in the northern US, in our town meeting we accepted fracking into our community for the money we could gain from it. The thing is, for every day that is passing our town the citizens of our town are getting sicker and sicker and we found that it was because of the natural gas extraction in our local area. The citizens cattle and animals are dying from the toxic water and the children are getting sick from the toxic gas. So to protect your town you should deny the upcoming request from the natural gas company that wants to destroy your community aswell as the did to us.

In the process of extracting natural gas, they release gas through drilling and creating small earthquakes under ground. When the gas is released from its former hiding the gas could go into the surrounding area through the dirt and start to destroy the environment and animal life. The gas is deadly but it also includes a lot of chemicals and other natural damaging chemicals.

To extract natural gas you also need an incredible amount of water. About 72 trillion gallons or 273 trillion m3 of water to run todays active gas wells. Only 10% of the water comes back, what for? approximately 300 000 gallons or 1.35 million m3 of natural gas every day that we can use to process and refuel our cars.

As mentioned earlier the process includes about 600-700 toxic chemicals. These chemicals are directly dangerous to the environment and to animal life. This makes Humans threatened too, because of the ecological system. If we kill out 1000 mice then owls and birds will be hit by attrition that will kill out a part of the animals population. So if we destroy a valuable water supply to thousands of animals, what would happen to the animals and the us? We would lose a lot of food and we will caught attrition swell because of a food shortage. To avoid this we would need to import food from other cities or countries to keep the people fed. To import food will cost money, money that could have been invested into schools or to fund a football tournament, the list will never end. Everything is a chain, if you cut out a part you will need to replace the chain with a more effective choice or the chain will be broken, in other words not functional.

So in conclusion the increase of the natural gas industry is not a good thing as the companies say. They are trying to bribe rights of your lands and destroy the very thing you hold closest to your heart. The evidence of fracking as a problem is overwhelming and we should not extract natural gas in our sweet little town. Marc Town should not be another victim of the fracking consequences, we should not support fracking. Let the cattle and the animal life live in our beautiful environment, let our children live a prosperous life with a opportunities to become whatever they like to become.

Thank you Mr Governor for your time and we hope you make the right decision in this question.
